The Privilege of Suffering?

You know how some things that may be really good for you don’t always taste so great?  You know it’s nutritious, but if you’re being honest, you’d rather eat something that is delicious and sweet—maybe even with some chocolate in it?  Well, that’s how I felt this morning when I read Philippians 1:29 (NLT):

For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for Him.

Let me be real with you; when I read it, I did not want to stand up and shout, “Hallelujah!”  I sat very still and thought, “Aw man!  More suffering?”  You see, as a Sister who has been walking in relationship with the Lord for quite some time, I have experienced some devastating, life-altering moments.  The thought of more suffering makes my mind weary and my body tired.  No one wants to suffer, right?  And I’m not going to try to put a “holy spin” on it either.  Suffering hurts.  It doesn’t feel good.  Even Jesus asked, “Is there another way to do this?”  (Matthew 26:39)

He’s Still Good

Sometimes life can be tough when we get consumed in the cares of the world.  We may even find ourselves crying out to God, “Why me?”  We are hurt, and we can’t seem to move beyond our circumstances.  Let’s face it, even the strongest of the strong have their moments.

Life is a series of cycles from suffering to overcoming.  And in the moments of intense suffering, we sometimes ask God, “Do You see me?  Are You really listening to my prayers?  Do You really know what I’m going through?”

The thing is, God heard you the moment the words came out of your mouth.  As a matter of fact, He heard them when they were still just thoughts floating around in your head.

God is trying to get us to quit focusing all of our energy and attention on our problems, burdens, tests, and circumstances – whatever it is that is causing us discomfort.  Instead, He wants us to focus on Him, the God we serve, and praise Him in the midst of it all.
