I love the fact that Mary, Jesus’s mother, knew that He could solve the problem, so she went right to Him. And after Jesus didn’t respond with, “Okay, I’ll jump right on that,” she still knew that He was going to meet their need. I love that! Did you notice her response? She didn’t get discouraged or get an attitude. She told the servants, “Just do whatever He tells you to do.”
First of all, she had the faith to believe that He was going to act. Secondly, she knew that the manifestation of the miracle was tied to their obedience. Did you get that? Faith + Obedience = Results!
It’s also interesting to me that the servants didn’t ask, “Wait, what? You want us to fill the jars with water? Why would we do that? Are we going to pass out water now?” But they didn’t respond that way. They simply did what Jesus told them to do. And keep in mind: this was Jesus’s first miracle. He hadn’t yet established Himself as a Miracle Worker to those folks. They couldn’t look at His track record. The servants were moving according to Mary’s faith, and she told them to obey Jesus.
So, let’s take a moment to unpack that.
