Be Grateful for What Is

Let’s unpack a few things here:

  1. The children of Israel had cried out to God to deliver them from the hand of Pharaoh and the Egyptians and the severe bondage they had experienced; God heard them and sent Moses to lead His people to their Promised Land.  (Exodus 3:7-10)
  2. God delivered the Israelites out of Egypt in miraculous fashion, so there was no doubt that His hand was moving on their behalf.  (Exodus 14:21-22)
  3. God had supernaturally provided meat (quail) in the evening and bread (manna) in the morning.  The people didn’t even have to look for food; God provided it for them.  (Exodus 16:12-15)

You’d think all of that would have been enough for the children of Israel to just be grateful for everything that God had done for them.  It was only by His hand that their lives had been saved.  Instead, they craved for what they used to have:  meat, fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.  They basically said, “We used to have of that delicious food, and now all we have now is this manna?”  (It didn’t matter that they ate those delicious dishes as slaves in Egypt.)
