How about this? What if we went to the Lord first and asked, “Shall I pursue?” Before we even make a decision, take a step, or embark upon a new venture, what if we asked God first instead of running to Him after the fact?
So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.” (I Samuel 30:8)
Let me give you some context here. David was in great distress. The Amalekites had attacked Ziklag, and they took the women and children as captives, including David’s wives. David and his men wept until they had no more tears; his own men even talked about stoning him because their grief had become overwhelming. (Sometimes our grief can actually cause us to lash out at others, even if they aren’t directly responsible for what has happened to us.)
Instead of being led by anger, worry, or fear, before David did anything, he “strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (verse 6) and he talked right to God. “What should I do, Lord?” He didn’t act on his own; he went right to God.
How do you strengthen yourself in the Lord your God? Couple up your prayer with your praises to God! Always go to God, especially when your emotions are running rampant, and never make important decisions when you are in a highly emotional state. Cast your cares before the Lord (I Peter 5:7). God will lead you and give you the peace you need.
