When They Just Don’t Want to Know

13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”

16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”

But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.

In this case, it was the church’s elite (Pharisees) who weren’t having it.  That’s right, church folks!  Instead of focusing on the miracle, they were focused on the day of the week because Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath.  The man had been blind all of his life, and instead of praising God for the restoration of his sight, they focused on the day of the week.  Sometimes we get so caught up in tradition and formalities that we can miss the move of God.  The Pharisees decided that Jesus was a sinner because He performed a miracle on the Sabbath!  But Jesus is not bound by rules or limitations.  It’s time for us to quit trying to orchestrate how He will work in and through us.  Let God out of the box and watch Him do His thing!  Jeremiah 32:27 reminds us, “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”

The Pharisees were divided; they couldn’t decide who Jesus was.  On one hand, he healed on the Sabbath.  But on the other hand, how could a sinner do what He did?   The reality is, no one can deny who Jesus is and what He can do (so you don’t have to try to defend Him).

After asking the man who he thought Jesus was, they still did not believe him.  They even sent for the man’s parents. In verse 20, his parents replied:

We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”

And guess what?  The Pharisees sent for him and still wouldn’t accept the truth.
