David’s oldest brother was furious. He even taunted David—who did you leave your few sheep with? Never allow others to diminish what God has called you to do. The truth is, David was being prepared to lead an entire nation as he took care of those few sheep. And his faith in God was being developed at an exponential rate. Eliab had it all wrong, didn’t he?
David had already killed a lion and a bear (verse 34-35), so he had total confidence that God would see him through. Look at what God has done for you. If He’s come through for you before, certainly He can do it again. You have to know God for yourself and move according to the way God tells you to move. Prepare yourself for battle. Read the Word and spend time in the Presence of God. And obey Him no matter what the situation looks like. God will come through in grand fashion for His children. And you know what? God provides unique techniques for His people. Sometimes it’s the simplest things, too. Look at verse 40:
Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.
He didn’t ask God, “What am I going to do with these little stones?”
David took a stick, 5 stones, and a sling, and he beat a 9 ft., 9 in. giant. And not only that, he took Goliath’s own sword and cut off his head. He cut off his head! Do you know you have the authority to cut off Goliath’s head? You don’t have to play around with the enemy, bargain with the enemy, or even just tolerate him. You have the authority to cut off his head.
It’s time for us to stop putting up with the Goliaths in our lives; time out for playing with him and entertaining him. We cannot live in fear of the enemy and his tactics. Yes, we are human and we have our moments of despair and frustration. But guess what? That is for a moment. After the moment, you have to get up and be ready to fight. How you respond will determine your outcome. Sometimes the fight is simply to pray and be still, standing firmly on the Word of God. Other times you may need to grab your sling and stones and handle your business. We have to seek direction from God and step out boldly, knowing that God will be victorious in and through us. God has a strategy for every Goliath in your life, and He is creative enough to lead you to victory in ways that you would never imagine. Trust Him and follow His lead. It’s time to kill those giants.
