Sometimes the Answer is No

2 Samuel 7:2-3

This is the first mention of Nathan in the Bible.  Nathan was a prophet, a confidant, and a good friend to David.  And David says, “How can I live in a beautiful house and God’s ark is in a tent?  He’s decided to build a temple for the Ark of the Covenant.  And Nathan says, “Go for it.”  He encourages his friend.  “Follow through on what is in your heart.”

David says, “I will build a house for God. I want to build a temple in His honor.”

Notice, David’s intentions were pure.  There was no ulterior motive, no selfish ambition, no trying to make a name for himself.  He wanted to exalt no other name but God in building this house.  It was a sincere idea that sprung from a heart of worship; that’s important to remember.

Sometimes we have wonderful dreams that we wish to pursue.  Sometimes they are from God, but sometimes they are not.  They can be incredibly noble, but when they are not from God, they will not come to fulfillment.  And it can be hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Sometimes we have super supportive friends who love us and want to encourage us – even if the plan is ours and not God’s.  Remember, Nathan said to go for it.

But look at God’s response through Nathan in 2 Samuel 7:4-5.  The parallel verse occurs in 1 Chronicles 17:3-4.  And it came to pass the same night, that the Word of God came unto Nathan saying, “Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in.”

When Nathan earlier told David to go for it, he wasn’t hearing from God. It was a good idea, but it wasn’t God’s idea for David. That’s why we need to really hear from God before we advise others.  But thank God, when Nathan did hear from God, he was obedient in telling David the truth.  Real friends tell the truth!

See, it wasn’t God’s plan for David to build a temple.  It was a great plan in David’s heart, but it wasn’t God’s plan. And that can be hard to hear.
