Where Are You Looking for God?

Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (I Kings 19:11-12)

Notice, before Elijah heard the still small voice, he witnessed a great wind coming through the mountain and breaking rocks into pieces, an earthquake, and a fire.  There were many distractions before he even noticed the small voice.  (And that’s what the enemy wants, our attention somewhere else instead of focused on God’s voice.)

The cares of the world are noisy, but God speaks to us in the still, small voice.  It’s important to set aside time to simply hear from God—away from the hustle and bustle of everyday.  We look for God to move in dramatic fashion, and sometimes He does, but we often miss His presence in those quiet, still moments.

Once Elijah placed himself in the position to hear from God, the Lord encouraged him and informed Elijah that he was not alone.  Not only were there 7,000 in Israel that were dedicated to God, but God had set aside Elisha to walk beside Elijah; he was not going to be alone.

God meets us where we are.  He knows us, and He cares about us—down to the smallest details.  We just have to listen for His voice.
